We Perform Functional
Capacity Evaluations (FCE)
Functional
Capacity Evaluations (FCE) are comprehensive objective tests administered by Physical Therapists, used to determine the injured
workers return to work status. These evaluations are objective methods for determining the injured workers ability to perform
the essential functions of their job based on job description. These tests also help facilitate case closure
or disability determination. The evaluation is usually 3-4
hours long and consists of 4 parts.
Part I is interviewing, and psychometric testing:
The therapist will conduct a thorough history of the injured
workers condition and care up to the current point in time. Several validated instruments to determine
perceived disability and the presence or absence of psychosocial barriers to recovery will also be administered.
Part II is clinical testing:
The Physical Therapist observes posture and gait, and then
measures the patient's range of motion, strength, reflexes, and sensation.
Part III functional testing:
The
patient will be asked to perform a variety of physical movements and tasks such as walking, bending, and carrying loads. The
test activities vary for each patient and are based upon individual diagnosis and information from the physician and the employer.
The Therapist takes care to introduce all of the activities very gradually while monitoring the patient closely for any signs
of complications.
Part
IV Review of the findings, and recommendations:
After reviewing the test findings, the Physical Therapist summarizes the results, and gives recommendation
on future restrictions, limitations, or management. A full report is sent to the referring doctor describing
the test components and results.
